Camping[edit]

There is a good place to camp in McKenzie Bay offered by Douglas Chowns. For only $10 you can pitch your tent in his garden, there is water and a long drop, a wood B-B-Q and the tent site is nicely sheltered between bamboos. walking on the road you will find some signs on the left hand side pointing to his place at 2432 Whangarei Heads Rd. Ph 09 434 0819. He can also help out with the boat crossing to Marsden Point. cheers!

Harbour Crossing[edit]

  • Duncan Thorpe and Peter Cross can get people across from Reotahi Bay to Marsden Point. Call them as far in advance as possible - 021 08381171.

If you need to go to Whangarei City for re-supply, there's good hitchhiking from here on along the road.

  • Go to the boat ramp just before KM398 (About 60m from the turning head at the end of Beach Road, Reotahi.) between 6:00am and 7:30am and hitch a ride with folk crossing over to the Oil Refinery for work in their small boats.
  • Douglas Chowns. 2432 Whangarei Heads Rd. Ph 09 434 0819.He can help out with the boat crossing to Marsden Point. cheers!
  • Alternatively, look out for a boat to take you across the channel to Marsden Point. Fishing enthusiasts tend to depart boat ramps (Urquarts Bay, Reotahi Bay) or jetties (McLeod Bay) early morning or evening. Choose a seaworthy craft, ask for a lifejacket & offer koha (a donation) for fuel. Be aware that the area immediately surrounding the Marsden Point wharf is a high security area and is closed to any unoffical boat traffic. The little beach west of the MP wharf, adjacient to the Northport wharf is a suitable place to land or depart from.

Get on the trail early morning and hitch a ride on any boat you can. Some folk commute by small boat from a ramp at the end of Beach Road to work at the refinery on the south shore.
